Starship Flight 14 reaches orbit as Artemis III slips ~90 days

Quiet weekend on several beats—then Monday morning delivered a milestone that every Artemis schedule owner has been waiting for.

SpaceX’s Starship Flight 14 lifted off from Starbase and reached Earth orbit for the first time. After losing one Raptor post-separation, teams briefly called off the insertion attempt, then pressed ahead; the ship circularized, deployed 26 Starlink V3 satellites (first operational Starship payloads), and deorbited early after roughly three hours instead of the planned ~9-hour stay. The Super Heavy booster completed a clean Gulf splashdown simulation. For Artemis, this is not a spectacle story—it is schedule risk reduction. Starship HLS still needs orbital ops, tanker cadence, and reentry survivability before a 2027 LEO docking rehearsal and 2028 surface missions are credible.

That urgency sits against NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman’s Sept. 20 workforce memo: Artemis III is “~90 days broken” against the internal schedule. Best case remains summer 2027 for the crewed Orion–lander docking rehearsal in Earth orbit, preserving as many as two 2028 landing opportunities; further slip could leave only one late-2028 shot. Isaacman flagged supplier shortfalls (valves, TVC actuators), Orion OMS work, and lander timing—and said NASA is helping Blue Origin’s LC-36 rebuild and anomaly recovery so both HLS providers can support mid-2027. Next near-term program marker: an SLS tanking test before year-end.
